Schraders Inn... Kaneohe Bay Hideaway
Schraders Inn is the kind of place that most tourists, and even local folks, would miss! It sits quietly in a very modest neighborhood on Kaneohe Bay with surroundings quite different from anything you'd envision for an island vacation rental. That's the beauty of this place! Visitors wishing to get away from the hustle and bustle of the typical tourist haunts will find Schrader’s a good choice for true peace and quiet and an opportunity to get a glimpse of some authentic Hawaii.
Schraders Inn sits on a small penninsula jutting into the bay from close to the center of the its long, irregular coastline.
The penninsula is bordered on one side by an ancient Hawaian fishpond and also one of the many stream outlets into the bay. During the rainy season, the shore waters fronting the Inn and all along the coast get muddied by streams while dryer seasons portray the true beauty of this magnificent bay!
Driving up to the main entrance to Schraders Inn you’ll notice a humble, yet welcoming building looking more like someone’s house than a front desk to a hotel. Immediately, you’ll also notice the dramatic Koolau, the mountain range that separates Oahu’s windward and leeward sides. Right about now, you start to realize that this place is very different than most places you hear in accounts of trips to Hawaii. The lanai area which serves as the inn’s eating area gives view to both segments of the windward coast and a glimpse out toward Kaneohe Bay, the big reason you’ll want to consider staying at Schraders Inn!
As is characteristic of Kaneohe Bay, the waterfront here at Schraders Inn is at times muddy (especially after heavy rains). But don’t let that fool you! A short ways out into the bay and you have some of the most awesome waters in which to snorkel, dive, kayak, and fish in!
Every Wednesday and Saturday, the inn’s launch takes guests out to the Kaneohe Bay Sandbar, a favorite site for locals who have the means to get out there. Here’s a true sandbar that’s like a beautiful beach in the middle of the bay during low tide then completely underwater during high tide. In between the launch’s scheduled excursions, guests can roam the expansive Kaneohe Bay on their own with the inn’s kayaks or take advantage of a range of on-the-bay activities like jet skiing, glass-bottom boat tours, and diving which operate at the nearby Heeia Pier.
Although it’s got a pool, Schraders Inn is not the kind of place you’d go to lounge poolside while being served mai-tais and pina colladas. Instead, it’s the kind of place where quiet rules and you can get into an island rhythm that even most locals miss by listening to small waves lapping on the wall or measuring time by the ebb and flow of the tides which expose and submerge the area fronting your waterfront hideaway. Here’s a place that you can go out onto the dock and be by yourself as you look over Kaneohe Bay and really see what it must have been like to be back in old Hawaii.
One of the nicest things about staying at Schraders Inn is that each unit has a complete kitchen offering the opportunity to cook your own meals… like fish you might catch right within Kaneohe Bay! With full kitchen and utensils, you’ll also be able to take advantage of all the roadside stands on the windward and northshore areas selling fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, and other goodies you’ll be able to stock up on!
The women in the family prefer the rooms with the enormous view of Kaneohe Bay. The elevation allows you to see much of the bay and the Koolau Range as well...
I, on the other hand, prefer the cottages right on the water’s edge as the sound of water always puts me into the best state of mind possible. It’s so relaxing to sit on the lanai with coffee in hand and a fishing pole hanging over the railing during high tide and watching crabs foraging for food over the exposed bottom during the low tide. Seriously, there aren't many places in all of Hawaii that you'd find a vacation lifestyle like this... along with some pretty fantastic rates, too! You might find you can stay on vacation a little longer than you realized!
Take a close look at Schraders Inn on Kaneohe Bay! It'll be an experience you'll want to include in your memories of Hawaii!
