Tagged Papio Crosses Channel!

Clay Tam, who heads up the Ulua Tagging Program sent out this e-mail to program participants in January 2006 regarding one amazing papio... or is this a typical papio?

IMPORTANT NEWS: Tagged Papio Crosses Channel!

Happy New Year!  The Ulua Tagging Project starts the year off with a bang!

DAR Ulua Tagging Project makes history!  A tagged papio from Oahu is recovered on the island of Hawaii at South Point! The papio was originally tagged January 8, 2005 by the Kewalo Keiki Fishing Conservancy Program.  The omilu measured 13" fork length and was double tagged (part of our tag retention study) before being released.

Almost a year later on January 7, 2006 angler Eric Boroughs recaptured this papio.  Eric had recently moved to Hawaii from the mainland and has been trying to catch a papio. The very first papio he catches happens to be a tagged omilu. The papio was caught at his favorite fishing spot near the South Point of the Big Island.

Eric recognized the tag sticking out of the papio, he was familiar with tagging programs on the mainland.  After taking the papio home Eric removed the algae (limu) from the tag and found the tag number along with our DAR phone number.  He immediately called our office to report the recapture of the tagged papio and provided us with information on the fish.

The recovered papio measured 18" total length (16.5 F.L.) and weighed 3 lbs. Who would have thought a papio would cross a channel to another island.  This papio not only crossed one channel but three major channels between the islands. The distance calculated was 210  miles!

A Big Mahalo to Eric for calling in this recovery!

To all of our taggers a BIG THANK YOU for all you support and help. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!. Go Get'um!

Other reported crossings in 2005:

There were three other papio that were recovered and re-released that crossed to another island in 2005. By coincidence these three were all caught by taggers and re-released.

Special note:

We would like to thank the Western Pacific Fisheries Council for supporting a much needed additional position to our project.  This position will help us provide service and project outreach. We welcome a board Richard Beebe who will be in charge of outreach and education. Richard will be helping us with bettering our presense and contacts on the neighbor islands. He will also assist us in developing educational materials.

From all of us at DAR Ulua Tagging Project we wish all of you a Happy New Year.

Mahalo,

Annette, Clay, & Richard
