Hawaii Vacation Rentals

Hawaii vacation rentals come in as many forms as there are travelers to the islands!

Due to Hawaii’s strong tourist economy, a good number of vacation rentals are maintained by individual owners, bed and breakfast operators, and professional management companies offering anything from tiny studios and cottages all the way to beachfront condominiums and estates to suit the most extravagant tastes and budgets!

Whatever type of lodging you’re seeking, though, the rule of thumb remains… the closer you get to the "water" the higher the cost. If you've ever tried to price a hotel room... one with a mountain view vs. one with an ocean view, you've already discovered the premium that's placed on the ocean.

Hawaii vacation rentals are generally self-contained units which generally include kitchens and, quite frequently, multi-rooms. For us, and many of our friends, being able to cook our own meals makes the difference between experiencing real Hawaii vs. the typical tourist experience. Just think... you come to Hawaii to fish. Wouldn't it be great to be able to take your catch home and cook it up for dinner? Just this last Christmas, some relatives came over and rented a condo in Waikiki. While Christmas potlucks are an annual tradition, it was really special cooking up dinner and taking breaks to sit on the lanai watching the sunset from our twenty-third floor condominium!

Generally, the cost of Hawaii vacation rentals make for more economical lodging while you're here. For the most part, the trade-off is the meticulously-kept hotel room vs. a more modest environment. However when that difference could mean saving hundreds of dollars, the more modest vacation rentals suddenly take on a very special appeal. Add to that the savings of not having to dine out every night and you could be staying in the islands a lot longer than you might have realized. You'll also find a more tranquil setting then you'd find in a hotel environment… no busy lobbies and guest activity desks. You might not get the maid service, room service, or running-a-tab perquisites you'd have at a hotel but chances are you'd find some other things to enjoy with the money you'd be saving while staying at a vacation rental.

Of course, if money is no object, there’s a plethora of Hawaii vacation rentals that run thousands of dollars per night and leave nothing out of their lists of amenities! But heck, if you were looking for those types of properties you probably wouldn’t be perusing this site in the first place, right?

Vacation Condos

If you like staying in the tourist areas, close to shopping, entertainment, and dining spots... try some of the Hawaii vacation rental condos. Here are some of our picks for great places to stay:

The Outrigger Condominiums Here are a group of condominiums operated by the Outrigger Hotels, one of Hawaii's largest hotel operators with hotels and condos on each island. Browse through Outrigger's condos on the island(s) you'll be visiting. You'll find some great deals on really good locations!

If you’re looking for a condominium type setup far from the trappings of any popular tourist spot, one of our favorites is Schrader’s Windward Country Inn. Here’s a very modest set of units located on the coast of Oahu’s Kaneohe Bay. It’s the only "hotel" in Kaneohe and a most unique place to stay!

Residential Vacation Rentals!

Hawaii’s many beach communities have given rise to a good number of residential units… yes, houses, or parts of houses, being available for rent. And in some of the popular areas like Kailua Town, on Oahu, a variety of interesting vacation rentals abound from the ultra-extravagant beachfront estates to tucked-away studios and cottages situated on residential properties. Travelers wishing to avoid the hustle and bustle of the popular tourist areas are increasingly seeking out these vacation rentals in Hawaii’s beach communities.

Staying in these types of vacation rentals makes it easy to seriously pursue the activities offered by the areas such as kayaking, fishing, biking, and other activities that require a lot of gear or equipment. These vacation rentals are not cheap. But remember, the economy comes in the numbers. A house with a few bedrooms can accommodate a large group over a longer period of time bringing your actual cost per person down considerably from what would have been spent on a few hotel rooms for the same period of time.

If it’s within your budget, go straight for the beach house. If not, start looking inland and you’ll find the prices drop considerably with for every row of houses you move away from the beach. But whichever you choose, you’ll find Hawaii vacation rentals offer an opportunity to not just visit Hawaii… but to “live it” for whatever time you are here!
