Hawaii Beaches...
Our Favorites!

white sand beaches

It's always interesting to hear about Hawaii beaches that are among the top-rated beaches in the nation... and in the world. And it's even more interesting to hear the criteria upon which these selections are based.

At the top of the list seem to be the quality of sand, water, and overall surroundings. Yet, while these are admirable qualities that we all appreciate, our favorite Hawaii beaches are probably selected according to some pretty different attributes!

And while we have Our Favorite Beach, we hope you'll have the time to explore Hawaii and find the beach that's everything you're looking for! Finding that beach might turn out to be the best time of your life!

In over fifty years, I can count on my hands the number of times I've simply laid on the sand and soaked up the sun, something our friends and relatives from the mainland seem quite satisfied with for their beach agenda. It seems that for many visitors, Hawaii beaches are a destination and an end in itself. Once you get to Hawaii, you enjoy the beaches!

For me, and for many other local folks, Hawaii beaches are but a means to an end... a venue to enjoy something in particular. And it goes without saying that the perfect weather and conditions of Hawaii beaches makes it ideal for so many ocean activities like...

Fishing... Kayaking... Kayak Fishing... Bodyboarding...

Bodysurfing... Snorkeling and Diving... and Windsurfing & Kitesurfing!

And while we'll often go to the beach for picnics or just to unwind, the beaches we pick are seldom those that so many travelers are trying to visit.

Kona Coffee

Take for example Hanauma Bay, on the east side of Oahu. Here is one of the most famous of all Hawaii beaches a quick fifteen minutes from where we live. I've gone to that beach once in the last forty years not so much for lack of interest but simply because of the crowds.

Check out the Beaches of East Oahu!

The same can be said about Waikiki Beach, not only the most famous of all Hawaii beaches but quite possibly the most famous beach in the world! Now here's a fantastic beach but the closest I would get is driving by when Waikiki happens to be between where we are and where we have to go!

Now don't get me wrong on this. If you've never been to any of the Hawaii beaches that top the lists, do make it a point to enjoy them because you undoubtedly will. But remember, Hawaii is a state literally surrounded with beaches of every kind and each offers its own special appeal depending upon what it is you're prepared to do.

A great alternative to Waikiki...

Often, you'll find the beach of your dream to be one you came across as you were on your way to someplace else or maybe after you've taken a wrong turn. Like maybe finding a solitary rocky shore where it's just you and the sound of the ocean crashing against the rocks.

Join us for a quick tour of Oahu's North Shore!

It may be a beach that simply happened to be crowd-free at the time you drove by or one in which scores of fishermen were crowding the shoreline in pursuit of a large school of fish. Maybe the surf was particularly high on that day or the sun was about to set with just the right amount of cloud cover to create an extraordinary spectacle on the horizon.

Where else can you see the sun rise from the ocean and see it set into the ocean?

Get your camera ready for Hawaii Sunsets and Sunrises... you will be pleased!

If you're a bit more adventurous, your favorite of all the Hawaii beaches might lie in some remote area...

like Kauai's Na Pali Coast where the only way to get to the beach is by ocean or hiking in through a spectacular valley!

Perhaps it will be a sandy beach...

or a beach covered with rocks of volcanic origin rounded by the forces of water in streams and in the surf...

or beaches nestled amongst a coastline of barren lava rock like those of the Big Island's Kohala Coast...

or the beauty of a unique eco-system that is Oahu's Kaneohe Bay!

Indeed, so much of Hawaii is tied to its beaches. Open yourself up to the many exciting activities Hawaii beaches offer and you might find yourself getting hooked on this Hawaii lifestyle.

If I had to recommend one book to buy about the beaches in Hawaii, it would probably be John Clark's "Hawaii's Best Beaches." A retired fire chief, John provides an accurate and informative presentation of the best beaches in the state. Although he's written books for each of the major islands, I think that each of us will find our "own" favorite spots through a serendipitous combination of factors like simply being at any of a multitude of great beaches on the right day!

For example, imagine yourself driving along the highway. You come across a beach with an expansive stretch of white sand and clear waters... are you really going to continue searching for that "written-up" beach that hundreds of others are also headed to that day? Maybe, and maybe not. But just so you have a choice, do consider this highly popular book!

Florida Beaches has a lot in common with the beachcomber life here in Hawaii. If you're closer to the Florida Coasts, check out beachhunter.net! This has got to be one of the most comprehensive sites about beaches, anywhere!
