Fishing Supplies In Hawaii

Fishing supplies. In Hawaii, the stores that furnish us with our hooks, line, sinkers, lures, and all of the other "necessities" for fishing Hawaii's waters are as unique as the islands themselves!

Keeping in mind that Hawaii's got its "Big Box" fishing equipment providers like Sports Authority and Walmart, it's the old "mom and pop" stores that have spanned generations of fishing enthusiasts that can provide a bit more than just equipment and supplies but also techniques, trends, and where the bite's happening!

Racks at the many "mom & pop" fishing supply stores like this one at Nanko are chock full of all things needed to enjoy the action on Hawaii's beaches!

Walk into any of the old-time stores and you'll find an array of traditional equipment and specialized tackle evolved from native Hawaiian fishermen as well as those with skills and techniques brought from abroad and refined in island waters.

In most of these small shops, you'll see taped to walls and counters photos of local fishermen proudly displaying their catch and chances are, you'll walk into conversations about where the fish are biting and what color lures are working the best at which locations!

The types of fish that are available will vary with each type of location and conditions and the person manning a small fishing supply can also give you a quick orientation of what you'll need to catch the most common game in the area you expect to spend time at.

If I'm traveling between islands, I'll generally stay away from bait rigs as it's just too much of a hassle and prospects are good enough with a simple lure. Depending upon where you are, however, the colors of the lures and the type of action will make a big difference in your ability to get a chase from the fish in the area.

How To Make Wooden Lures

Whenever I'm on another island, I make it a point to visit small fishing supply stores I might happen to come across just to see what lures and spots they might recommend. Often, I'll run into local fishermen in the store that will often share their information as well, something that's more of a rarity in the larger department stores. During the summer months, a good deal of fun is to be had with seasonal fish like oama (o-'wah-mah) and halalu (ha-la-lu) two juvenile species that school nearshore and are pursued in earnest by local folk.

Gamefish like trevally, barracuda, bonefish, goatfish, and a number of fiesty wrasses and goatfish will also offer bright prospects for enjoying your time in Hawaii and the simple tackle and techniques required to go after these are readily available in a single stop at the local fishing supply stores.

Nanko's president, Tab Terayama, offers good local advice in addition to the wealth of fishing products he stocks in his windward Oahu store!

If you're new, or visiting the islands with a penchant for some productive time on the water, a good bet would be to visit one of the many family-owned fishing supplies on a any of the islands. You might pay a tad more than some comparable products available at the larger suppliers but I can assure you the extra "knowledge" and insights that are available for the asking at the smaller stores will be well worth it!

In addition to their convenience for anglers, the fishing supply stores in Hawaii reflect islanders' long love affair with the ocean and the fishing lifestyle that it enables. Nanko, shown here, opened its doors in 1961 and has been going strong ever since!

One such store, on Oahu's windward side, is Nanko in Kaneohe. Founded in 1961, Nanko was one of those stores that we would stop at on our way to fishing sites along Oahu's northeast shore. Here, in a crowded but efficiently organized shop (characteristic of nearly all of these tiny super supplies) you can find anything and everything you'll need to chase after Hawaii's ocean game be it on or offshore!

Take some time to find the "old-time" fishing supply store closest to you and you'll get a bit more than just products!

And while shops like Nanko's, or Charley's in the Ala Moana/Kakaako area in Honolulu specialize in fishing tackle, shops like Nervous Water Flyfishers (exclusively flyfishing) in Kaimuki, and Maui Sporting Goods in Kapahulu (spearfishing equipment) have carved out even more specialized niches for themselves!
