Driftwood, Issue #004 -- Fried Fish! November 23, 2006 |
| Dear Beachcombers, It's Thanksgiving Day and I've a lot to be thankful for. As we lounge around the house waiting to celebrate the day with the family later on this evening I was thinking about how much fun it was to break away to Hilo last month with the family.
One of the highlights was finally taking the family to Seaside Restaurant & Aqua Farm, one of my favorite spots when I'm over there for work! Here's a family-owned and operated restaurant that is as popular with locals as those visitors fortunate enough to stumble upon it!The old yet inviting building doesn't really reflect the superb menu which offers typical seafood fare plus fresh fish pulled right from the surrounding pond! Growing up catching and eating fish as frequently as we did would make one think it wouldn't be a big thing to go to a restaurant for fried fish... but it is, believe me! While offering entrees like king crab, lobster, and flown-in fish the big attraction here are the right-from-the-pond treats like aholehole, moi, and mullet!
On this evening, they were out of the steamed mullet so I had the fried aholehole while Dawn had the fried moi. Kristen, who prefers to avoid bones as much as possible, ordered the furikake salmon while Laura was content to try the macaroni and cheese from the kids' menu! For those unfamiliar, the aholehole are bony fish with very tasty meat and especially suited to frying due to their thin body dimensions. When fried right, the fins and tail are "crunchably" delicious!
Yes, we've a lot to be thankful for and here's wishing you and yours a wonderful Thanksgiving and God's blessings! Warmest aloha,
Richard |
