Driftwood, Issue #002 -- Where's da Fish? June 29, 2006 |
| Dear Beachcombers, June is almost over and more and more, folks frequenting the beach are starting to wonder... when are the oama and halalu coming in? We all know that last year, both ran late. What do you all think for this year? August, or maybe even September, huh? Whenever the season hits, many of us will be waiting with our handpoles for the oama and our ultra-light tackle for the halalu! And here's a couple of tips for what it's worth! 1) When going for the oama, don't wait for the little buggers to bite. You don't know how many circles I've stood in over the years thinking how come everyone else catches four to five for every one I catch! No one told me, until after my last "oama" session that you simply let the lead it the bottom and jerk quickly. If you wait to feel the "bite," you've already lost your bait!
2) When going for the halalu, watch the guys who are bringing them in regularly. Most will use the same lures/bait, but it's all in the retrieve! Try to match the speed and erratic pattern that you see the most productive fishers using and your chances should improve!
By the way, if anyone knows who this father/son team is, please let me know as I've got a frameable picture for them! I couldn't get their names because I had to rush back to the dentist to pick up the wife and daughters! Kayak fishing for the summer is starting off great with brother-in-law Ed Kawasaki and friends hooking into some mahimahi and a big barracuda this month - by the time I got to go with them last week the bite was pau! Should have known, though, as we were heading to the Kawela Bay launch site, we noticed the cows weren't grazing... neither were the fish that day! Oh, well, the summer's still got lots of days left. That's all for now. Here's hoping your summer will be filled with the stuff of which Hawaii beach summers are made. Much aloha, Richard |
